Leah M. Hardy

Leah M. Hardy is a US based multimedia artist and sculptor specializing in metalsmithing. She is currently the Associate Professor of Metalsmithing Foundations at the University of Wyoming. She holds an MFA from Indiana University and a BFA from Kansas University. Her sculpture is a visual diary of intimate collections, sacred spaces, and dioramas that trigger memories and dreams describing the collective human experience. Her works are part of numerous collections and exhibitions internationally. She travels widely around the world as part of her professional teaching and learning.

Saturday, October 3 HYDRAULIC PRESS FORMING

This all-day workshop will offer participants a hands-on experience in using the hydraulic press to create small-scale 3-dimensional forms from copper sheet. Each participant will saw out his/her own design in a plexi sheet to create a silhouette or non-conforming die. The resulting metal form can be used in a sculptural or wearable context. Cold connections such as rivets and slots + tabs will be introduced as potential ways to attach the pressed forms to additional pieces of metal. Metal and plexi will be provided along with technical notes. Participants are asked to bring any hand tools that they own such as jeweler’s saws, pliers, files and hammers.

Sunday, October 4 PATINAS AND PRISMACOLOR

A plethora of patinas that are easy to use in a home studio will be introduced in this workshop, including both cold and hot applications. Additionally, using Prismacolor pencils on metal will be shown as a viable and accessible way to achieve details and vivid color on metal. Participants will have a full day to explore and experiment with these processes. Metal, patinas, Prismacolor pencils and technical notes will be provided. However, participants are welcome to bring metal or pieces from home to work on—or hydraulic pressed forms from the Saturday workshop for those who attended. Copper and brass will work the best for the majority of the patinas. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring ideas for color designs as well as any hand tools that they own such as jeweler’s saws, pliers, files and hammers.
