East End Studio & Gallery, Marshall, Michigan, and Flow Art Space, Saint Paul, Minnesota each announced this week that works by silversmith Joan North, Stevens Point, have been juried into their national exhibits. The Michigan Gallery show, “For The Birds, ” chose her “Icarus” necklace which appears bird-like with an obsession for the sun, made from sterling, scenic jasper and pearls. The show runs from Oct. 13 to Nov 1. Flow Art Space selected North’s entry along with 8 other artists from across the country for their “Celebrate, Contemplate” show Nov 30 to Dec 17. “Tannenbaum” necklace celebrates a traditional Christmas tree, but also suggests the emotional complexity of the holiday. Fabricated with sterling fragments from the past (like the holiday itself unearths), it is edgy with corners and lines everywhere but also soft and sweet with the misty Chrysoprase bits of color. Former Dean of the College of Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, North is an actively exhibiting artist, known for distinctive silversmithed jewelry that reflects life’s moments. North’s jewelry pieces has been exhibited in 16 galleries and museums across the country this year, most recently in Michigan, Minnesota, California, Florida, and Pennsylvania including solo shows at artZ, Center for the Visual Arts & Q Galleries in Wisconsin. She has won awards at seven out of sixteen art shows this year. North has been operating Joan North Designs for 16 years in her Stevens Point studio. Photography by WDCC member Michael Thee is now on display at the Leenhouts Gallery, 1342 N. Astor St. on Milwaukee's lower east side. The gallery is operated by the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee.

The photos on display are from Michael's "Abandonment Issues" series. He explores former industrial sites, pipe graveyards, and old farmsteads, and these abandoned spaces become colorful abstract compositions that capture beauty but nudge us toward closer contemplation: What once took place here?

A photographer since age 12, Michael studied fine arts with an emphasis on photography at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and graduated with honors from Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College's program in jewelry fabrication. Today he is able to combine his love of photography with his talents as a goldsmith and independent studio jeweler in his business, Michael Thee Studio.

The gallery/common room is open most weekdays as well as weekends. Between Sunday morning services, church members gather for coffee and connection in the room. You can call ahead at 414-273-5257 to be sure the room is available for viewing the photos. The show closes Oct. 22.

“Metaphors in Metal: That’s Life!” premiered in March 2016 at the local Q Gallery.
